(set: $ConversationFifthKnight to 0)Hearing of the Princess's beauty and of her family's wealth, countless suitors flocked to her manor to profess their love, or even to merely see her.
<img src="images/Suitors.jpg" alt="" />
Men from far and near posted themselves outside her home, peeking over fences and through windows, hoping to catch a glimpse of the princess as she traveled from room to room.
They stayed there day and night, sacrificing even their sleep for a chance at seeing her, but all in vain. They were all turned away by the princess, she sought no husband.
[[Most gave up hope, except...]] The Princess's refusal to entertain her suitors caused her father great stress.
He sympathized with the plight of the five brave knights who had waited years outside his home for a chance to bear witness to Princess Moonlight.
And he was an elderly man, and feared that should he pass there would be no man to take care of the Princess in his stead.
[[So he spoke to his daughter...]]He sat beside his daughter's bed one evening and they shared some herbal tea.
<img src="images/Father.jpg" alt="" />
"I found you many years ago, when you were a little creature three inches high, in the midst of a great white light. So I have always believed you were our little miracle."
The princess smiled, "I know father."
But she soon noticed her father's furrowed expression.
[[She asked him what was wrong...]]The Princess loved her father, and there was nothing she would not do for him. But she was as clever as she was beautiful.
After a moment of contemplation, she spoke, "Before I consent to marry one of these brave knights, however, I must make further trial of their love."
Her father was surprised; had the knights not already proven their love for her through their vigil outside their home? What more could she demand?
The princess responded, "All five of these knights have spent years waiting for my attention. How am I to know which among loves me the most?"
[[The father conceded...]]
"While I am alive it is right for you to remain as you are, but I am old and weak. One day I shall cease to be, and who will take care of you then?"
The princess felt sorrow as she contemplated his words. Her father clasped her hands.
"I pray of you, meet these five brave men one at a time and make up your mind to marry one!"
[[The princess couldn't refuse...]]At last, however, most of the men, seeing how hopeless their quest was, lost heart and hope both, and returned to their homes.
All except five knights, whose determination seemed to wax, not wane, in the face of her rejection.
These five men even went without their meals; they snatched morsels of whatever they could get delivered so that they might always stand outside the dwelling. They stood there in all weathers, in sunshine and in rain.
They waited for days and days, then weeks, then months, then seasons in hopes of proving their love to the princess. To no avail, she had no interest.
[[This upset her father...]] These words made great sense to the father, who thanked his daughter for her obediance and left the bedchambers to speak with the five knights.
He offered them his sympathy for all they had endured and the patience they had demonstrated in their campaign to win his daughter's heart.
Then he delivered them the Princess's message; she would consent to marry whosoever was successful in her final trial, to be determined at dinner that evening.
The five knights all accepted the trial eagerly, and returned home to groom themselves for the formal occasion.
[[Meanwhile, the Princess...]]Later that same evening, the five knights arrived one by one, bearing gifts for the Moonlight Princess. The father greeted the suitors eagerly, and escorted them to the dining room.
The father explained, "My daughter waits to speak with each of you, one by one, after we have finished our meal."
The suitors rapidly consumed each course of food, impatient to finally lay eyes upon the fabled Princess Moonlight. The knights played their flutes in turn, singing self-composed songs telling of their great and tireless love for her, in hopes that she could hear.
[[Elsewhere, the Princess...]]Meanwhile, the Princess was deep in contemplation.
If she could not reject these knight's affection, she would have to assign each an **impossible task** to prove their love.
But she needed more information; a task that was impossible for one man may be trivial for another.
She would need to speak with each knight and determine what task would break their will or was beyond their means. She waited for dinner, determined to be rid of them forever.
[[And so began dinner...]]The princess was seated in her bedchambers, waiting behind an ornamental screen, and recoiled at the saccharine declarations of love that filled her family's home.
Her father entered the room, clearly excited. The princess feigned a smile as a number of attendants groomed her hair scrubbed and her feet.
<img src="images/attendants.jpg" alt="" />
"My daughter, these five knights have each come to earn your love. Each awaits your summons to speak with you and receive your trial."
The princess nodded, prepared to devise **impossible tasks** and be rid of their affections once and for all. The attendants bowed, and exited the room.
Princess Moonlight pulled out two floor pillows, placing them across a table from one another, and began to prepare some tea. After a moment of hesitation, she called her father to bring the first Knight in.
[[The Princess considered who to speak with first...->Summoning the Knights]]The Princess considered which of the five knights she would summon to her bedchamber to interview. The father agerly awaited the Princess's word.

The first of the knights entered the room with a confident stride. As he caught sight of Princess Moonlight's glow from behind the screen, he staggered in awe, before quickly reassuming his composure.
He was a handsome man with jet black hair and stirring eyes. He dressed in ceremonial armor bearing the design of a snarling, red dragon.
[[The Princess introduced herself...]] The second of the knights entered the room and immediately exuded an eager, yet suave presence. He was dressed in fine silks adorned with jewels, and his hair was tied up neatly into a ponytail.
He turned to Princess Moonlight and his composure melted into a warm smile as he bent down on one knee.
"Ah, my Princess, you are every ounce as beautiful to behold as the rumors hath promised." He stammered out. .

The Third Knight saunters into the bedchamber smelling of saké and the sea. A weathered man in his early forties, the man is dressed in thick, warm clothing characteristic of the fisherman and harbor workers. And yet, he carries himself with the deportment of a distinguished noble.
As he raised his gaze to meet the Princess's, his crusty lips formed a smile.
"Hullo, my sweetness.", the knight said, as he tipped his hat and winked. His breath was salty.

As the door opened, the Princess was startled as she had heard no footsteps prior. Through the doorway stepped a terribly ugly gentlemen in his early thirties, unshaven and wearing high-quality soldiers attire.
He strode across the room swiftly in relaxed yet deliberate movements, bowing as he reached the floor pillow and taking his seat on the floor pillow.
He met the Princess's gaze, and smiled warmly as he recognized her shock.

A wheezing, haggard men stepped through the door, leaning on the frame for support. He turned away from the princess shamefully as he pulled a handkerchief from his coat and wiped phelgm from his face.
Turning back into the room, the princess could see his pallid complexion and how his eyes were framed by dark bags. He was dressed in stained fine clothing, clearly a noble of some description.
He looked truly sickly as he stumbled across the room in short, janky steps. He collapsed on the floor pillow, once more wiping his face with the handkerchief as the princess carefully pushed the cup of tea across to him.

(set: $FifthIllness to 0, $FifthWealth to 0, $FifthNoble to 0)Before the princess could even speak, the knight introduced himself and began to speak of his many accomplishments: he was a respected commander in the military and had led many campaigns in foreign lands for the glory of Great Nippon.
"I have been to the frigid mountains of Tibet, to the shores of the Korean peninsula. I have slain countless foes in battle. And yet, all of that seems so small in the face of such beauty, my love."
[[And so she waited...->Waiting]]
(set: $FirstForeign to 0, $FirstBattle to 0, $FirstBio to 0)The princess spoke, "I have never been outside the village. I have heard only stories of these distant lands."
The knight grimaced, "You are missing little. I have only ever visited such places on matters of war, and I have only interacted with the lesser peoples with my blade."
"The only purpose for leaving Great Nippon is to take resources wasted upon the lesser nations of the world whose beliefs are backwards."
The Princess shuddered at the thought of the knight's violence and ignorance, marveling at his disregard for diplomacy.

(set: $FirstForeign to 1)The Princess expressed wonder at the concept of combat, of war. She had never known such violence within the peace of her home, only knowing stories.

The princess insisted on hearing a story, and the knight relented.
"I was on a campaign in China, my love, fighting a platoon of archers guarding a temple overlooking a river valley." As he tells his story, he looks to the princess repeatedly, checking to see if she is paying attention.
"The path to their location was exposed, we would be cut down in moments by arrows. So my men and I snuck up the mountainside, striking them from behind."
The Knight laughed boisterously. "Their foolish gods did not protect them."
The princess chuckled softly and insincerely, as internally she was frightened of his fear and intolerance of the unknown.

"How many men do you command?", The princess asked, feigning amazement.
"Over one thousand. I am an accomplished general, and my men can stand against any enemy. I have never lost a battle."
"But of course, I only ever wage war in the name of the glorious Emperor and the land of Nippon." He hastily added.

"Oh, the only love second to that I have for you is the love I have for great land of Nippon", The prince proudly responded. "I love everything about this land: the people, the forests, the mountains, the sea."
"Whenever I go abroad, my greatest weakness is not a chink in my armor or a flank in my army's formation. It is the longing I feel to return home."

"A pleasure to meet you miss. I'm a samurai- well, a Ronin, of the house of Lord Takai." A shadow crosses the knight's face for a moment, before he slips back into his effortless charm.
"After my master died, I spent my life traveling the land, helping villages, slaying monsters, and practicing the arts, including that of the blade."
[[The Princess watched the man...]]"So", the knight says while leaning back on seemingly nothing. "What do you want to know?"
The princess furrowed her brow. His charm had worn off quick as he made himself comfortable in her bedchamber.

"My master was slain by a Yokai, a terrible Kitsune who had feuded with his bloodline for centuries. In vengeance, I hunted the demon down and banished it from this world."
"That's incredible..." The Princess remarked, thinking of the awesome power necessary to banish a Yokai. The Knight seemed to speak of it with so little gravity, as if such acts are commonplace for him these days.
"It sounds as though you have reclaimed your honor, good samurai." The princess offered.
"No", the Knight replied. "I haven't."

And yet he began to regale the Princess with all the stories of his journies. All the monster he had slain, all the maidens he had rescued, all the corrupt nobles he had brought to justice, and the lost dolls he'd returned to little girls around the land of Nippon.
His stories were truly legendary, and he had the confidence and presence so strong that the Princess was convinced they were true. It seemed like he could do anything.

(set: FourthAdventure to 1)The princess inquired about the myriad skills the samurai had acquired during his journey.
"A couple things here and there. I'm a excellent fisherman, a well-read poet, I have written songs for the theatre, and can play six different instruments. I have even played my flute in the Imperial Theater. I know my manners, and how to behave in high-society settings; I'm a wicked dancer."

As his throat cleared, the man looked towards her, cracking a wide smile that showcased his discolored teeth and filled the room with his foul breath.
"I'm sorry for my... condition. It's in my blood, I'm afraid." the man grumbled cheerfully, before breaking into another nasty coughing fit. Recomposing himself, the Knight continued "I am the son of a magister from the Emperor's court. And you are verry pretty."
